SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH- Major winter storms hit Utah ski resorts this past weekend leaving as much as 34 inches at Utah ski resorts. With December snow totals nearly 170% above average, these early January storms are creating prime skiing conditions. Park City Resorts received as much as 29 inches in the last 72 hours and Powder Mountain, near Ogden, received 24 inches on Sunday alone. Weather forecasts suggest more storms are anticipated to follow with as much as 18 inches of additional precipitation.
Utah is home to 13 world-class ski resorts. Five of Utah's resorts ranked in the Top Ten for "Best Snow" according to the readers of SKI Magazine in the publication's 2007 survey. More information on Utah's resorts, or skiing and snowboarding in Utah can be found at www.skiutah.com . |

And then there were three. Taos Ski Valley, one of the last bastions of snowboard-free skiing, caved to commercial pressure last week and said it will allow snowboarders on the slopes starting at the end of the season. For the family that owns the storied resort, it's an effort to expand the business and retain customers whose children or grandchildren prefer snowboards to downhill skis. But it's a crushing defeat for some lifelong Taos fans, who now are threatening to pack up and sell their New Mexico real estate. It leaves just three major resorts standing against the snowboarding juggernaut: Alta and Deer Valley in Utah, and Vermont's Mad River Glen. Relations between skiers and riders (as snowboarders are known) have never been chillier. An age gap helps put the groups at odds. The majority of skiers who skied more than a day at a U.S. resort this past year were older than 25, according to the National Ski Areas Association; the majority of snowboarders weren't old enough to rent a car. The divide has led each side to generalize about the other: Boarders cast skiers as old, stuffy and conservative; skiers say boarders are young, reckless and rowdy. Taos, built to resemble Switzerland's St. Moritz, opened in 1955 and is known for its steep terrain, gorgeous scenery and laid-back vibe. Skiers fuel the local economy, buying art, real estate and fancy dinners. Some locals say boarders won't bring the same kind of money to town. "They bring their lunch to the mountain instead of buying it," says Liz Jamison, a real estate agent and ski instructor at Taos for 22 years.

Vote for Terje! How many conversations among snowboarders have revolved around the greatest of all time? I have been there plenty of times naming my top five who have been rotating through the years, but always at the top is Terje. If you are also the same way, click on the following link to award Terje the citizen of the year in Norway for bringing the Artic Callenge the his homeland and advancing the sport further than any other rider in history. Who set the latest world record for the quarter pipe? Vote away. Terje Haakonsen is on the list for Norway's Citizen of the Year competition.
You can cast your vote for the snowboarding legend online on their website. It's in Norwegian, but it's pretty easy to figure out what to do.

This new documentary features some of the most daring skiing ever shot in the sports history. Guides such as Doug Coombs who lived for the sport of big mountain skiing and guided snowboarders and skiiers around some of the most trecherous conditions mother nature has to offer. While riding, each of us in our own way has felt the thrills and defeats of riding chutes or closing in on cliffs while our mouths go dry and the world focuses in on the moment. This movie is not nececarilly about one sport, but one way of life we all share together. To watch the teaser click http://www.sonyclassics.com/steep

Brian Head, UT- Brian Head Resort has completed a major expansion project – an Interconnect System that conveniently joins its Navajo and Giant Steps ski mountains. It also adds nearly 35% of exceptional new terrain. The total cost of the Interconnect System exceeds $6.5 million, with the Town of Brian Head contributing $900,000 towards the project. The Interconnect System includes two new triple chair lifts, expanded snowmaking, and a beautiful new skier bridge over State Highway 143 that connects the previously divided Navajo and Giant Steps Mountains. Skiers can now access the entire Resort without removing their skis. Guests travel down the east slopes of Navajo Mountain and cross over the Highway on the skier bridge to the base of the new lifts. Skiers and snowboarders of all abilities can now enjoy both mountains as one, making this family getaway even more user friendly than before. “This is the most significant improvement that has been made to the Resort in over twenty years. It allows us to utilize all of the scenic and varied terrain the two mountains have to offer, and makes the Resort ski and feel like a much larger resort.” Said Henry Hornberger, the Resort’s Vice President and General Manager. |

Powder Mountain is hosting a unique party on Saturday, December 15th to kick-off the 2007/08 season. The event includes activities for the entire family and offers an interesting twist to the usual “buy one, get one free” promotion.
With the purchase of a full price child’s lift ticket, the parent skis free. There is no age limit – children from 6 to 60 are encouraged to bring their parents to Powder Mountain for a fun-filled day of skiing, boarding, games and prizes. Children will need to purchase the appropriate ticket for their age, i.e. those 13 or older will need an adult ticket. Although children 6 and younger ski free with a paying adult, on December 15th, it will be more economical to purchase a child’s lift pass so that their parent can receive the freebie. This is a multi-generational event with a prize for the family with the most generations represented.
Besides skiing and boarding, the party atmosphere will be enhanced with music, contests and clinics. Free introductory rail slide clinics will be conducted by the Snow Sports School’s Teen X instructors. A hula hoop competition and scavenger hunt will keep all ages entertained whether a participant or a spectator.
